Acupuncture - how does it work?

Acupuncture is used to maintain or restore health by balancing the energy or Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) in the body - it is often used along with other therapeutic techniques such as gua sha (scrapping), tui na (massage) and moxibustion (or moxa). Chinese and Japanese Medicine theory explains disease and physiological function based on the concepts of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements (Earth, Wood, Water, Fire and Metal). In Western concepts acupuncture has been shown through imaging to work on the nervous and hormonal systems.

Is it safe in pregnancy?

Research is reassuring that there are no increased rates of any problems using acupuncture during pregnancy. However, practitioners are careful to treat women using recommend points and avoiding the use of so called ‘forbidden points’ during pregnancy – These are a small group of points used for cervical ripening, and and can be used after 37 weeks of pregnancy for labour preparation. It is recommended that you consult a licenced acupuncturist for treatment. This may be especially relevant for women who have any complications in their pregnancy
